Reiki Treatment Outcomes – Carer Respite
Reiki Treatment Program Outcomes Report

This report outlines the outcomes of the third Reiki Treatment Clinic delivered by Makoto ReikiDo, an approved training provider. The clinic was supported and funded by Better Health Network, a Victorian Community Health Provider. The program was designed and facilitated by the Founder of Makoto ReikiDo, who served as both Reiki Treatment Practitioner and Teacher. Service delivery was provided by a team of three practitioners comprising one qualified teacher and two Student Reiki Treatment Practitioners.
The program commenced on 15 May and operated from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm each Friday over a five-week period.
Program Participation
The clinic achieved strong engagement and participation across the program:
- Overall attendance rate: 81.67%
- 10 appointments were cancelled due to participant illness or carer responsibilities
- 1 available appointment remained unfilled during the additional make-up clinic
Evaluation Approach
The Reiki Treatment Program was evaluated using brief self-report measures collected before and after each treatment session. Participants were asked to rate their levels of:
- Pain
- Relaxation
- Sense of wellbeing
In addition to these measures, participants were invited to provide feedback about their experience in their own words. The evaluation approach was intentionally kept simple. As the program was unfunded from a research perspective, every effort was made to minimise participant burden, particularly given the significant responsibilities many carers already experience in their daily lives.
Outcomes
Across the program, participants demonstrated consistent and meaningful improvements in pain, relaxation, and overall wellbeing.
Pain scores commonly reduced by several points following treatment, with many participants reporting substantial relief from discomfort and an increased sense of physical ease. Relaxation measures showed marked improvements, with participants describing deep states of calm, emotional release, and reduced stress levels, even when navigating complex personal and caring responsibilities.
Feedback relating to wellbeing highlighted enhanced feelings of calmness, clarity, connection, and resilience. Many participants described an increased capacity to manage everyday challenges and a stronger sense of emotional balance following treatment.
Overall, the program delivered holistic therapeutic benefits that supported physical comfort, emotional regulation, and psychological wellbeing. Participants consistently reported leaving sessions feeling lighter, calmer, and more grounded, demonstrating the value of Reiki as a complementary wellbeing intervention that supports integrated mind-body health.
The outcomes of this clinic further reinforce the potential of community-based Reiki programs to provide accessible, person-centred support for individuals experiencing stress, caring responsibilities, health challenges, and the demands of everyday life.
Wellbeing Outcomes
Over the course of 44 Reiki treatment sessions, participants reported significant improvements in their overall sense of wellbeing. Using a simple self-rating scale before and after each treatment, the results showed a consistent pattern of positive change.
On average, wellbeing scores improved by 49.2%, with three-quarters of all sessions showing a measurable improvement. Nearly one-third of participants experienced a substantial shift in wellbeing, with reductions of two or more points on the rating scale.
Participants who began treatment experiencing higher levels of stress or emotional distress often showed some of the most noticeable improvements, reporting greater calm, ease, and emotional settling following their sessions.
The numbers were supported by powerful personal feedback. Clients commonly described feeling lighter, calmer, and more connected after treatment. Many reported reduced stress and anxiety, improved clarity, emotional release, and a greater ability to cope with everyday challenges. Others noted improvements in physical comfort, deeper relaxation, and renewed motivation to engage in self-care activities such as gardening, creativity, and mindfulness practices.
Overall, the findings suggest that Reiki treatment provided meaningful support for emotional balance, mental clarity, and general wellbeing, helping participants reconnect with a greater sense of calm, resilience, and inner stability.
Key Program Outcomes
Caring for a loved one can be demanding, often leaving little time for self-care and wellbeing. Despite these challenges, the Reiki Treatment Program achieved an exceptional 81.67% attendance rate, significantly higher than what is typically seen in multi-week carer support programs. This strong level of participation highlights the value carers placed on the opportunity to rest, recharge, and receive support.
The results demonstrated consistent positive outcomes across all areas measured. Across 44 Reiki treatment sessions, participants reported:
- 49.2% improvement in overall wellbeing
- 54.9% reduction in pain
- 55.4% improvement in relaxation
- 75% of sessions showed improved wellbeing
- Nearly one-third of sessions demonstrated clinically meaningful change
Importantly, improvements were observed not only in physical comfort but also in emotional wellbeing and nervous system regulation. Participants frequently moved from states of stress, tension, and discomfort into experiences of greater calm, ease, and balance.
These findings reflect what has been observed across all three Reiki clinics delivered by Makoto ReikiDo. Participants consistently describe the program as highly valued, with places often filling quickly due to demand. Many carers shared that the treatments provided a much-needed opportunity to pause, reset, and reconnect with themselves amidst the ongoing pressures of caring responsibilities.
The program primarily supported older adult carers, many of whom continue to manage employment, health challenges, personal trauma histories, and complex caring roles. As the often unseen backbone of the health and community care system, carers carry significant responsibilities. The outcomes suggest that Reiki treatment offers a meaningful and accessible way to support their wellbeing, resilience, and capacity to continue caring for others.
Overall, the program demonstrated that even a short period dedicated to rest, relaxation, and therapeutic care can make a measurable difference to the lives of carers.
